Curriculum

Curriculum and instruction are the heart and soul of our learning community. It is essential that instructional programs be focused, engaging, demanding, and differentiated. As educators, we understand that lessons must be aligned with state and national curriculum standards. Additionally, by providing a variety of active and technological learning processes, we are empowering our students to view class work as a valuable and engaging learning experience connected to a real-world context. Through the process of differentiated instruction, we are consistently providing developmentally appropriate instruction as a means to meet the needs of every student. Further, BTCS teachers are utilizing a variety of instructional strategies specific to both small and large group instruction as well as individualized instruction to empower all students. As professional educators, it is our goal to truly maximize the success of all students in the BTCS learning community. We realize that the powerful vehicles of curriculum and instruction, through which we connect with and guide our students, are essential elements in a student-centered mission.

Assessment
BTCS teachers in grades 3-8 will implement a new benchmarking program during the 2009/10 school year.  This valuable benchmarking tool will assist teachers in continously monitoring student achievement in all academic subjects as we prepare for spring TCAP testing.

TCAP Testing Information

Further, BTCS secondary teachers work rigorously to prepare our students for Gateway Testing, End-of-Course Testing, as well as national ACT and SAT assessments. Additional preparatory opportunities are provided
through Compass Learning, Study Island, and Skills Tutor at the middle school level. At the high school level, Plato and eLearning opportunities are provided. Additionally, before- and after-school tutoring sessions are provided at both primary and secondary levels.

Writing

BTCS teachers continually strive to strengthen and enhance writing skills for all students. Through both integration and curricular connections, students are consistently focusing on essential writing traits in addition to the complete writing process. It is through the implementation of the research-based Six Traits Model that students are provided with meaningful and practical tools to enhance their writing.

The Six Traits model is specific to:

  • Ideas
  • Organization
  • Word Choice
  • Voice
  • Sentence Fluency
  • Conventions/Editing Elements

If you should need any additional information and/or clarification, please feel free to contact the curriculum team. By working together, we are truly maximizing student success!
