On Wednesday, February 23, seven THS students traveled to King College to participate in their third X-Cell program meeting. X-Cell is a mentoring program made possible through Americorps. The program involves four local colleges and seven local high schools. The goal of the program is to boost graduation rates for Hispanic students, and outreach to all International students in regional high schools. The THS student visit included an informational session and campus tour. King College Director of Admissions Greg King, Associate Director of Recruitment Elvin Browne, and staff members Michael Webb and Heather Levesque spent time explaining the admissions process and conducting a question and answer session. Three King College mentor students then gave the THS group a campus tour which ended with lunch in the dining hall. All of the admissions staff joined the group for lunch, answered more questions, and paid for the food!
Tennessee High currently has 18 students who qualify for the program and an average of 15 have attended prior meetings. Previously X-Cell came to THS and brought mentor college students from King to speak with THS students. Past topics have included admission to school, athletics, financial aid, and future career goals.
