The Middle Ages
Sixth grade students at Haynesfield Elementary School were studying the middle ages and the Black plague. They were to choose a part of the middle ages life and recreate it. Several students went all out with their presentations. One student designed a knight’s armor, while another student built a castle. Some students designed clothing worn by women in waiting and other students made weapons used in warfare. They wrote a report on it and then recreated something that they found in their research to be interesting.

Hooray for the U.S.A!!
Haynesfield’s kindergarten students from Mrs. Debusk, Mrs. Camper, and Mrs. Duncan’s classrooms spent time studying their country in a unit titled “Hooray for the U.S.A” During their unit, they studied national symbols, first Americans, explorers, and national celebrations. Using classroom maps of the United States, students shared stories of the places they visited.
To wrap up this unit of study, kindergarten held a special Red, White, and Blue Day. Each child was encouraged to wear something colored red, white, and blue. The classes held a parade around the school grounds chanting U.S.A., U.S.A.! Rattles of tambourines and colorful head-banded students lit up the sidewalk. All three classes met at the flagpole, recited the Pledge of Allegiance, sang “My Country Tis of Thee,” and then ate red, white, and blue popsicles.

Green 4th graders
Haynsefield Elementary hallways were green with Glamour on St. Patrick’s Day. Most noticeable was the fourth grade hallway. In conjunction with their simile and metaphor unit, students held a contest for the person with the most green. It was definitely like “seeing the world through green sunglasses” one student said. Many comparisons were made between the students and their environment. Tricia Markel’s wig was like a giant lime, JonAlan King is like a green bean, and Jeremy Kinkead’s hat is a pot of green gold were all popular comparisons

Haynesfield’s Mrs. Rutherford is well knows for her enthusiasm when it comes to reading and AR. Her fourth grade students rose to previous challenges for AR this school year; the fourth six weeks was no exception. The prize this time was a pizza lunch restaurant style. The waiters were the fourth grade teachers Mrs. Rutherford, Mrs. Morton, and Mrs. Lamie. With classical music soflty playing in the background, students were lead to their table decorated with flowers. Their order was taken and delivered to them. Students were very excited to be waited on by their teachers.

100 Day Food Drive
Public Relations Office - March 12, 2009
As part of the 100 days of school celebration, kindergarten classes rally together for the common good of our Bristol community. Haynesfield’s kindergarten annual food drive was a success again this year. The goal for each class is to gather 100 items of food to donate to the Community Resource Center. The hope is to bring awareness to students about helping those in need.
During the food drive, kindergarten teachers focused their instruction on advertising this year. They used lessons as an opportunity to promote the food drive. Each class designed posters and delivered them to each Haynesfield classroom. The students talked to the classes about the importance of donating items to the food drives.
This year was a successful as students brought in six barrels of food. Six classrooms brought in more than the 100 items asked for. A total of 1604 items were donated.
Kindergarten students and staff would like to thank Kay Ward from the Community Resource Center for working with them and helping to provide the barrels.

A 5th grade study of The Great Depression
Fifth grade students at Haynesfield Elementary have been
studying the Great Depression. As a
culminating activity, students created projects depicting an event that
occurred during that time period.
Projects included recreations of the Dust Bowl, Hooverville, and the
Stock Market Crash. Arranged by Anna Kimerer, FDR even made a surprise visit to
speak about the New Deal. Student
Kiersten Hawthorne also arranged a visit by ZuZu Bailey from It’s a
Wonderful Life to talk about her experience in the Great Depression.

Pizza and Pajamas in Pre K

Our entire Pre K class has memorized their meal account number. They now take responsibility (just like the big kids) for typing it in at meal times. To celebrate this accomplishment, they wore pajamas to school and made their own homemade pizzas!!

Tuck Everlasting Study
Fourth grade students studied the book, Tuck Everlasting, in class and completed literacy-based activities related to the story. However, the students did not read the end of the story in class. Instead, they had to wait for the novel study’s culminating activity to find out how the exciting book would end!
On the final day of the unit, students attended the Tuck Everlasting play at Barter Theater. The play was true to the book, and the ending surprised many students. One student commented, “I loved the book and the play. This was really fun. The ending of the story was a little sad, but the book was still great.”

OPEN YOUR EYES BE ENERGY WISE!

Nikki Neutron was called to Haynesfield Elementary on November 19th on his first mission to save the day. Fourth grade students along with Bert the Dirt Expert, Thunderstorm, and U.R. Fired helped to teach Nikki what energy and electricity are and how we can use them efficiently.
Helpful hints for your family to be energy wise are to:
1. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs.
2. Turn off all electronics when you are not using them.
3. Close the blinds in the summer to keep cool air inside, and open them in winter to keep in warm air.
4. Get a programmable thermostat set at 78 degrees in summer and 68 in winter.
5. Turn down the temperature on your water heater.

The Roaring Twenties
.JPG)
Fifth grade students at Haynesfield had a ball last week. Students in Mrs. Buckmaster’s Social Studies class dressed up like people of the Roaring Twenties. Boys dressed up like gang leaders or typical boys. Some wore berets and paper boy sacks. Girls tried to mimic “flappers” and had a great time showing off their style. Some of the girls demonstrated their dancing ability by doing the Charleston.

Haynesfield’s Secret Garden Gets a Facelift

Janit Leonard wrote a wonderful story about a little girl who grew up in a world without trees for The Young Gardner Essay Contest. Janit showed great imagination and application of content learned in science class.
The prizewinner for the essay contest won a Nature Garden valued at 1500 dollars from Appalachian Gardens in Piney Flats. The location chosen for the landscaping project was the Secret Garden. Once a slightly overgrown space used only by those who did not mind giant toads and mosquitoes, the Secret Garden now resembles a tranquil space for learning and relaxing AR time.
Janit was very excited at being chosen for her essay. Her personal prize was a lunchbox stuffed with goodies such as a pencil, magnet, t-shirt, and a gift certificate for Wal-Mart. Thanks to her dedication to the environment, many students for years to come will enjoy this outdoor setting.

Meeting AR goals
Fourth grade students who passed their AR goals got to participate in the second annual PIE IN THE FACE day. At the end of the second six weeks the three top AR goal passers from each class got the privilege of throwing a pie in the face of the fourth grade reading teacher Mrs. Rutherford. This messy activity is highly sought after by students in fourth grade. Many worked really hard to be to top reader in their class on both points and comprehension goal. In the end nine pies in total were thrown.

Challenger Visits Haynesfield Elementary

On Monday, November 3rd, Challenger, an American bald eagle, visited Mr. Laoo’s third grade classroom Monday afternoon to teach the students some facts about eagles. Mr. Albert Cecere, Challenger’s caretaker, who works for the American Eagle Foundation at Dollywood came and share Challenger’s story.
As a young eagle, Challenger was blown out of his nest. After surviving the fall a human family cared for and nursed Challenger back to health. Federal and state fish and wildlife agencies use Challenger to educate people about his species.
We were so lucky to have challenger at our school. If you want to know more about Challenger or the American Eagle Foundation visit their website at www.eagles.org .

School days!

Public Relations Office - September 3, 2008
Pre-K students at Haynesfield Elementary School are getting acquainted with the procedures and rituals involved with attending school. In the past two weeks Ms. Shelton’s class has been working on getting to know each other’s names and making friends. They discussed the Haynesfield expectations and what it means for preschoolers. They have been practicing lining up and walking down the hallway quietly. Most importantly, they are learning their lunch account numbers. Great work Pre-K!

Miss Tennessee visits Haynesfield!

Ellen Carrington is currently the reigning Miss Tennessee. She will be visited Haynesfield Elementary on August 26, at 8:30. She spoke to our students. This is what some students had to say about her visit:
Today Miss Tennessee went to Haynesfield Elementary School to talk to children about tobacco, smoking, and how bad it is for you. She showed a healthy lung and an unhealthy lung. After that her speech was over. She let the kids take pictures and she signed lots and lots of papers. Then she left.
-Carson Musick
Miss Tennessee had just entered the gym when everything went crazy! She started talking about how gross smoking and tobacco is. She was very smart about smoking dangers. She showed us very healthy lungs and very unhealthy lungs. She asked little kids how they felt when they were around people smoking. They said it was yucky and it made them cough a lot. When she was done everything went crazy again because everyone wanted her autograph and a picture of her. It was a cooky and crazy day.
-Sakota Blevins
Today, Miss Tennessee, a.k.a. Ellen Carrington came to our school. She wore high heels and a blue dress. Her hair was tied back into a ponytail. When the boys saw her most of them thought she was hot! They also thought she had a pretty smile and a crown. The girls thought she looked like a princess. She also has curly hair that people thought was pretty. She spoke to us about drugs, like cigarettes. She said, “Cigarettes have nicotine in them which makes it hard to stop smoking.” So it’s best not to start. When she had to leave people took pictures and got autographs. She gave high fives, answered questions, and gave hugs. Then she left. -Gracie Ketron
