ACCIDENT INSURANCE
Student insurance is available, through a group plan authorized by the School Board, for both school day and twenty-four hour coverage. Details concerning the insurance will be sent home at the beginning of the school year.

ADMISSIONS
New kindergarten students must be 5 years old on or before September 30 of the school year in which they are enrolling. New first grade students must be 6 years old on or before September 30 and have completed an approved kindergarten program. A physical examination with complete immunization records is required when a student enters school for the first time. Ages must be verified by a birth certificate.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Announcements are made at the beginning of each school day. If an announcement is needed for an activity (scouts, sports practice, etc.), please contact the school office by 8:00 A. M.

ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance is essential to a student’s success in school. Most subjects are taught in sequence, requiring the understanding of each concept in the order of presentation. Persistent absenteeism creates a genuine hardship for a student and is regarded as a very serious problem.
The school day begins at 8:10 AM and ends at 3:10 PM. Car riders and walkers will be dismissed at 3:00 to help reduce traffic around the school. Arrival at school should not be before 8:00 a.m. Only safety patrols, students riding the bus, eating breakfast in the cafeteria, and those participating in the extended day care program are allowed in the building before 8:00 a.m. The school offers an extended day program through the YMCA for any child who requires supervision from 7:00 AM until 8:00 AM and from 3:10 PM until 6:00 PM. Please refer to the section on Extended Day. If students arrive before 8:00 a.m., they will be sent to the extended day care program, and a fee will be charged.
Prompt arrival at school is expected of all students, as late arrival disrupts class and causes loss of instruction time. Students are to be in their assigned classroom seats no later than 8:10 a.m., or they are reported as tardy. Tardy students must report directly to the office for an "Admit to Class" slip to present to teachers. Children who are late to school should bring a note to explain his or her tardiness. Unexcused tardies and early withdrawals will prevent students from receiving Perfect Attendance recognition.
If it is necessary for a child to leave school during regular school hours for any reason, a parent/legal guardian must sign for the child in the office upon leaving and upon return.
When a student is unable to attend school, parents should contact the school. Please give the student’s name, teacher’s name, and reason for the absence. A voice mail line is available 24 hours a day, for your convenience in notifying the school of your child’s absence. Absences are classified as excused or unexcused. Conditions for excused absences include:
1. Child’s personal illness
2. Illness or incapacitating condition of a family member which requires the temporary help of a student (A physician’s statement is required.)
3. Death in the immediate family
4. Recognized religious holiday/event
5. Required court attendance
6. Approved school-related activities
7. Cultural/Educational activities
A maximum of five days will be available for family educational/cultural activities.
A request must be filed with the principal prior to the activity. The request forms are available in the school office. They must be written and completed by the child’s parent or legal guardian. A request cannot be approved after the absence has occurred. Make-up work is the responsibility of the student and parent.
Unexcused absences will be determined by the principal. Grades from days missed due to unexcused absences will be graded at 80%. In addition, unexcused absences will be handled as a discipline problem.
Following an absence, it is the responsibility of the student or parent to contact the teacher and make up all work missed. Arrangements will be made within three days following the absence.
On the day of an absence, parents may pick up homework in the office after school. In order to minimize class interruptions, teachers will not be able to provide homework assignments until after school

.AUTOMOBILES
To insure student safety the back parking lot and driveway have been designated for school personnel and school buses. Automobiles are not allowed to be parked in the driveway. Students should be dropped off and picked up in front of the school. Because of the congestion before and after school, it is important for everyone to observe all safety rules and be considerate of others.

BOOKS
Students are issued free textbooks. Other books may be checked out from the school library. It is the student’s responsibility to protect these books from damage, theft, or loss. Students will be charged for lost or damaged library books and textbooks. The final report card will be held in the office for those students with outstanding debts.

BUS INFORMATION

Bus transportation is provided free of charge. The buses are operated by Holston Bus Company; routes are established at the school system’s administrative offices. If you have questions concerning bus routes or safety, please contact Mr. Ben Rutherford (652-9244) or Mr. Vic Morrell at Holston Bus Company (968-3521).
Students are expected to conduct themselves in a safe, orderly, and considerate manner both on the bus and at the bus stop. The following rules have been established in order to insure the safety of all students:
1. Use only the bus and bus stop assigned.
2. Orderly behavior is required at the bus stop.
3. Remain seated, facing front, when the bus is in motion.
4. Talk quietly and make no unnecessary noise.
5. Keep head and arms inside the bus.
6. Do not litter the inside of the bus or throw anything out the window.
Violations are reported in writing to the principal by the driver. Second offenses and serious safety violations are reported to the parent by the principal; a third violation may result in denial of transportation.

CAFETERIA
We provide a clean, relaxed atmosphere in which our students can enjoy nutritious meals and visit with their classmates. Due to a federally funded lunch program, commercial foods are not allowed in the school cafeteria. Students are not allowed canned soft drinks.
The cafeteria uses computer accounting which tracks the number served and the activity in each student’s meal account. Students are assigned an account number in the cafeteria, and will use the same Cafeteria ID number through the twelfth grade. Students purchasing breakfast and/or lunch may pay on a daily basis, or they may wish to deposit money into their cafeteria account. Any amount may be deposited at any time. Money deposited in this account does not have to be used each day. It is the policy of the School Nutrition Program of the Bristol Tennessee Schools that refunds cannot be made. All student accounts should be depleted by the end of the school year or before, if a student moves during a school year. Students may not use another student’s account. There will be a $20.00 charge for any returned check.
Reduced or free meals are available through the federal lunch program. Applications for this program are available at school. The School Nutrition Office in the Administration Building determines eligibility according to established policies.
