Holston View Wins March Challenge

Holston View Elementary School students were the big winners today as the Be Present! Prize Patrol took over the school on the third date of Bristol Tennessee City Schools Be Present! Attendance Challenge!

More than 400 students and staff assembled in the gym for a celebration led by Prize Patrol personalities Roy G. Biv and Dude. The school was awarded a check for $100, a traveling attendance trophy, flowers and a large bouquet of balloons! As students exited the assembly, all were given a “present” made possible by donations from numerous community partners.

During the ceremony, students also heard from celebrity guest Jerry Caldwell, executive vice president and general manager of Bristol Motor Speedway. Caldwell congratulated students on their win and shared the important role “being present” plays for success in his life and the lives of all of those involved in racing.

“When I was little, I had some great folks that gave me advice,” Caldwell said. “One of the things they told me was if you will show up, have a positive attitude and work hard, you’re going to be way ahead of the field. You’re going to be ahead of pretty much everybody out there. So as you guys grow and get older, remember that. Continue to remember: show up. Showing up for school is so important. Showing up for anything in life is how you’re going to win.”

Bristol Tennessee City Schools is placing an increased emphasis on attendance to educate parents and students about the important role attendance plays in helping students achieve their academic goals. This is the third of four challenge dates where one of Bristol’s seven schools is being recognized monthly for the largest percentage increase in attendance. The percentage increase of each school is calculated by comparing the school’s attendance rate on the challenge day with the attendance rate on the same day of the previous year. Tennessee High School was the first winning school, and Avoca Elementary School won the second challenge.

One more challenge date remains for this school year on Friday, May 10.
