Bristol Students Perform High on State Assessments

Students in Bristol Tennessee City Schools improved their performance in nearly all areas of achievement and growth according to the 2019 TNReady scores, which were officially released on August 15, by the Tennessee Department of Education. In addition, half of our schools were designated as Reward Schools by the state.

Student results showed improvement in every content area, which includes Integrated Math I, Integrated Math III, English I, English II, social studies, U.S. history, third- through eighth-grade English language arts and third- through eighth-grade math. The only subject that declined in the percentage of students scoring on track was Integrated Math II.

The student academic growth indicator measures individual student growth using the Tennessee Value Added Assessment System (TVAAS). All schools and districts receive an overall student growth level, which ranges from Level 1 to Level 5, with Level 5 being the highest-performing. Our district growth indicator for all students was a Level 5 in all areas measured: literacy, numeracy, social studies and the composite score.

Chronic absenteeism is another indicator measured and reported by the state. Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing ten percent or more of the academic year for any reason. Based on a 180-day school year, that means a student would miss 18 or more days per year. As our district and schools implemented new measures to improve and promote attendance, the percentage of chronically absent students improved from 11.7% in 2017-18 to 10% in 2018-2019.

In addition, congratulations to Avoca Elementary, Haynesfield Elementary, Tennessee High, and Tennessee Online Public School, as all were designated as Reward Schools. The Tennessee Department of Education defines Reward School status as the top distinction a school can earn in Tennessee.

“Our 2019 TNReady assessment results truly show how hard our students and teachers are working each day in the classroom,” said Interim Director of Schools Annette Tudor. “I am proud and honored to be part of such an amazing team. Our students, teachers, parents and the entire Bristol community are invested in our district’s high expectations as we prepare students to be college and career ready.”

Great job, BTCS!
