Grading Scale Changes

Due to a recent change to state legislation, the grading scale in Bristol Tennessee City Schools for grades 2-12 will be updated to a 10-point scale beginning in the 2022-2023 school year. The updated policy is pending approval on second reading at the July 2022 Bristol Tennessee Board of Education meeting.

The change in legislation was made to align the grading scale with colleges and universities and provide more access to academic scholarships for college. The new grading scale also aligns Tennessee with most other states in the country, including Tennessee’s eight border states. The change will likely positively impact the number of students who qualify for Tennessee’s lottery-funded HOPE Scholarship. This scholarship requires either an overall high school GPA of at least 3.0 or a minimum ACT composite score of 21.

While the legislation only affected grades 9-12, BTCS will use a consistent grading scale throughout grades 2-12 to implement standardized grading across the district. The new grading scale will be as follows for all students in grades 2-12:

A: 90 to 100
B: 80 to 89
C: 70 to 79
D: 60 to 69
F: 0 to 59
