BTCS Reading Buddies

parent helping kid read a book

How It Works

Volunteers are partnered with a student/buddy and meet with their buddy on a weekly basis for just 30 minutes each time. Volunteers are welcome to sign-up as a Reading Buddy for more than one student.

Volunteers engage the student in various literacy activities, such as reading aloud to the student, listening to the student read, and other relationship-building activities.

Thanks to our awesome volunteers, students in the Reading Buddies program are gaining much more than critical literacy skills! Reading Buddies mentors provide an added boost of encouragement and connection from a caring adult, which is vital to a child's success academically, socially, and emotionally.

Research

Is the Reading Buddies Program Effective?

As educators, we value data, and the Reading Buddies program is no exception. Studies consistently show that students achieve at a higher rate when school, family, and community come together in support of student achievement! One of the tools used to evaluate the progress of Reading Buddies students over the course of the school year is the STAR Literacy Assessment.

According to STAR Literacy Assessment results from August 2022-May 2023, an impressive 95.5% of students paired with a Reading Buddy demonstrated literacy skill improvement. Due to the hard work of excellent teachers, better engaged families, and a supportive community, our students are on a pathway of success!

Testimonials from Our Reading Buddies

Is there a highlight Reading Buddies moment you would like to share?

"My kindergartner had no interest in reading or being read to. In fact, she would shut down at the mention of sitting down to read. Our last two sessions, I suggested she narrate a story to me and she do the artwork for a book written by her. It was a breakthrough and such a great end of the year."

"To have my first grader read a book to me for the first time. It was amazing to watch her grow this year."

"When my buddy started making progress and not being so shy. By the end, he would be so excited to look in his bag and pick the book he was going to read 'without help.' "

"All sessions are good memories!"

"It's a wonderful program!"
