Bristol Tennessee City Schools is proud to recognize Lauren L. Ragan of Holston View Elementary School as the district’s PreK–4 Teacher of the Year.
A Bristol native and Holston View alumna, Ragan’s journey into education was shaped by both family influence and a calling she came to embrace over time. Although she considered other career paths, her love for working with children and a strong sense of purpose ultimately led her to the classroom.
“I feel like I was definitely led toward education,” Ragan shared. “I’ve always loved working with kids.”
Ragan attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she began her studies in deaf education before transitioning to special education. She also completed a minor in American Sign Language and coursework in English as a Second Language, equipping her with a broad skill set to support diverse learners. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when many college courses shifted to a hybrid format, Ragan returned home to Bristol and spent a year substitute teaching across the district’s elementary schools. That experience helped shape her path and ultimately led her back to Holston View.
Now teaching special education, Ragan is passionate about helping students find their voice, sometimes in nontraditional ways. Through the use of assistive technology, sign language, and individualized strategies, she works to break down communication barriers and empower her students.
“Many of my students are nonverbal, so we focus on different ways to communicate,” she said. “Helping them build independence and learn to advocate for themselves is incredibly meaningful.”
Her dedication is also deeply personal. Ragan shared that having a family member with autism has further shaped her understanding of the importance of communication, growth, and opportunity for every child.
“Watching him learn and grow showed me how powerful instruction can be,” she said. “It really reinforced that opening doors for students is how I want to make a difference.”
Outside the classroom, Ragan stays busy with her family. She and her husband have been married for nearly five years and are raising two young daughters, ages three and one.
Ragan’s commitment to her students, her thoughtful approach to communication and independence, and her deep connection to the Bristol community make her a deserving recipient of this honor.
Bristol Tennessee City Schools congratulates Lauren L. Ragan on being named the district’s 2026 PreK–4 Teacher of the Year.
