FAQ

My child is making all A’s and B’s, why did we get a letter? Below are possible answers.

While all students will benefit from attending summer school, the state provides specific criteria for prioritizing students.

Although your child may be doing well in class, there are some learning gaps in ELA and/or math as shown in Aims Web, STAR, current benchmark assessments or the most recent TCAP tests. Your child’s classroom teacher can provide more information about assessment results.

Research shows students experience a summer slide in reading, but especially in mathematics over the summer. Attending summer school will lessen the effects of the summer slide and ensure your child is ready to master upcoming grade-level standards.

Is my child required to attend summer school?    Board Policy does not require students to attend summer school; however, students in grades 5-9 must pass the four core subjects to be promoted to the next grade. In accordance with TSSAA guidelines, students must be promoted to the next grade to be eligible for athletics. Students who are placed in the next grade level are ineligible to participate in school sponsored athletics for the next school year.

Our family has vacation planned in June. Can my child still attend the other three weeks of camp  Yes. Your child may still attend the remaining weeks of camp.

Will students be able to attend camp two or three days a week instead of all four?    Students will need to attend all four days; however, we understand that an appointment or illness may require an occasional absence. Research shows strong attendance is related to positive outcomes for students including gap closure, readiness for the upcoming grade level, and building relationships with teachers and students.

If my child attends the extended camp option, will I be able to pick my child up earlier than 5:30 p.m.?  For staffing purposes, having a consistent time when students will be picked up is preferred, but early pick up is possible. If students are off campus for a field trip, a 5:30 p.m. pick up will be necessary.

What are the lunch options?    Lunch will be provided to camp students for free by the BTCS School Nutrition Program, but students may choose to pack a lunch. The menu will be posted on the BTCS webpage.

Is transportation provided?   Transportation to and from school is provided within city limits.  Students will only be dropped off at the address listed on the registration form. The Avoca route will also pickup and drop off students at Littlest Angel. The YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, and Tech Girls will not pickup students after summer school.

When will the bus run?   Bus routes are available at the links above. Pick-up times are approximate.

Will before-school care be provided?

Yes, before-school care will be provided beginning at 7:00 a.m. each morning for rising first through fifth grade students. On-site registration will be available as you drop of your child.
