Certified Pharmacy Technicians

Seven Tennessee High School students in the CTE Health Science program of study recently earned their Pharmacy Technician Certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). These students are only the second group of THS students to earn the national Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential, in addition to four students from last school year.

Juniors and seniors are eligible to enroll in the Pharmacy Technician program and may take the certification exam after they complete a semester of coursework. As evidenced from many of the students’ reflections, their teacher, Ms. Sandy Anderson, has been a constant source of encouragement, support, and knowledge throughout the process.

The students in my Pharmacy Technician class are an outstanding group of young men and women,” Ms. Anderson said. “They worked so hard to accomplish their goal of becoming a Certified Pharmacy Tech. I am incredibly proud of them, and I can’t wait to see them all become successful healthcare professionals.

According to Ms. Anderson, employers prefer, and many require, their pharmacy technicians to be PTCB CPhTs. This past semester, H. Johnson Pharmacy and Walgreens inside Bristol Regional Medical Center provided a clinical experience for several students to receive hands-on training.

We are expanding our clinical component of the program for the upcoming year and are hoping that more pharmacies will be willing to come on board and help provide this same type of clinical, hands-on experience for the students,” Ms. Anderson said. This partnership will not only benefit our students, but it will also benefit each company by providing a trained workforce.

Katlin Bingham, Junior

I plan to work as a pharmacy technician while majoring in pharmacy or zoology at an undecided college. Being 16, I feel like there are hardly any jobs that can set me up for a career, but with my certification, I can use this accomplishment to get a job and to help with college. Having my PTCB certification sets me on path and gives me a path to fall back on.

Brooklyn Carter, Junior

I plan to be a veterinarian. I will attend the University of North Carolina to accomplish this goal and plan to overcome the challenges of college financially by working in a pharmacy, which is only possible due to Ms. Anderson and her class. Ms. Anderson did everything she could to help us. She always encouraged us to do our best and was overall a great teacher. I couldn’t do this without her.

Isabella Dye, Junior

My future plans are to work as a pharmacy tech throughout my college and high school careers. I plan to be a pediatric nurse or a pediatric surgeon. In Ms. Anderson’s pharmacy class, I not only gained my pharmacy technician certification, I gained confidence in my abilities as a person and a more in-depth knowledge of the medical field.

Brandon Dufore, Senior

I plan to attend East Tennessee State University to work towards becoming a pharmacist. During the spring, I will find a job as a pharmacy tech throughout college. This pharmacy class helped me find what I want to become after graduating. Ms. Anderson made the class fun and helped all students learn without feeling stressed about learning. Being able to be a pharmacy tech will hopefully make my journey easier. Without her class, I would not have known my interest in a career in pharmacy.

Carter Kinch, Senior

I plan to major in pharmacy at the University of Tennessee Knoxville while working as a pharmacy technician. Taking this class furthered my interest in becoming a pharmacist. My certification and knowledge will help me in achieving this goal. Even if I choose to change my career path, I can use my knowledge to become a pharmacologist, toxicologist, research scientist, and many other options. Having a great teacher also serves as a benefit.

Azeneth Rodriguez, Junior

My future plans are to work throughout the rest of high school and college as a certified pharmacy technician. I achieved this license in Ms. Anderson’s pharmacy class during my first semester of junior year. Her class has helped me a lot with my understanding of the medical field and how to believe in myself. I am still undecided for my future career, but I am positive that I want to do something in the medical field.

Chris Wilson, Senior

I want to go to East Tennessee State University and become a radiologist, working as a pharmacy tech throughout my journey of college. The pharmacy class I took during my time at THS will allow me to make my future plans more possible and has gifted me with many good memories. The class grew my love for the health sciences and grew friendships within the class. Ms. Anderson has been one of the most influential teachers within my life. She replaced one of my favorite teachers, and I expected her to have trouble filling the shoes of her predecessor. She took this challenge and destroyed it; I have been blessed to be taught by her. Due to her and my efforts, I am currently working within Food City as a pharmacy tech.
