The State of Tennessee defines "Family Life education" as an abstinence-centered sex education program that builds a foundation of knowledge and skills relating to character development, human development, decision making, abstinence, contraception, and disease prevention. Family Life law can be found in Tennessee Code Annotated (TCA) 49-6-1304.
Opt-Out Information
If you want your child to participate in these classes, you will not need to do anything. If you do not want your child participating, you are able to opt your child out in a variety of ways.
A digital opt-out form is available in the online Canvas Family Life course using your parent account. To access the Canvas course using your parent account, click here or type this link into your browser: https://btcs.instructure.com/enroll/687XNB. If you do not have a Canvas parent account, follow these instructions. You can also print an opt-out form below, pick up a copy at your child's school office, or contact the Secondary Curriculum office at (423) 652-9234 to have one mailed to you. Please return forms to your child's school. A form must be submitted prior to the start of your child's Family Life classes.

Parent Forum
You are invited to attend a parent forum to discuss the 2022-2023 Family Life Health Education curriculum for all students in fifth through ninth grades. The forum will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 13, at the Bristol Tennessee City Schools Administration Building, 615 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.
If you plan to attend the forum, please park in the upper, back parking lot and enter through the second-floor entrance by crossing the footbridge. Please note that the main front entrance will not be open.
