Returning Student Information Update

Parents and guardians of all BTCS students must complete the Returning Student Information Update online form each school year. A parent/guardian of each student should have received an email on July 17 with the information needed to complete the process. Information will also be mailed to each student's home the week of July 15. Like the email, the letter will also contain information specific to your child's account log in information.

It is critical that all BTCS parents/guardians complete this process as it replaces many of the paper forms which were once sent home at the beginning of the school year.

By completing this process, you can ensure your child’s school has updated contact information for you in case of emergency and any relevant medical information we need regarding your child. The Returning Student Information Update also includes information we are required to maintain by the state and federal government for EVERY student. Information and a link to complete the process are outlined below.

LAPTOP INFORMATION (see grade level)

All Grade 4 and New Grade 5: Laptops will be issued during each elementary school's Open House.

Anderson, Avoca, Holston View: Wednesday, July 31; 5 to 7 p.m.
Fairmount, Haynesfield: Thursday, August 1; 5 to 7 p.m.

All families are asked to arrive at 5 p.m. for the Open House/Laptop Distribution. Laptop distribution will end at 7 p.m. Students must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian to pick up their laptop. Parents/legal guardians must provide valid identification to ensure the safety of student information. You can expedite the time spent on-site by completing the online portion in advance.

Returning Grade 5, All Grades 6-8, and All Grades 10-12: Returning students kept their laptops, backpacks, and chargers at the end of last school year. Please ensure your child knows where to find these and arrives at school on August 2 with their laptop fully charged.

NEW 6-12 students will be issued laptops during the first week of school.

All Grade 9: Laptops will be issued during the first week of school. Returning students must bring their BTCS backpack. Students receiving laptops for the first time will be issued a backpack. As part of the Returning Student Information Update, all parents must complete the online portion of the laptop process. The online portion includes: 1) verifying and updating your child's information, 2) watching a brief training video, and 3) paying (or selecting a payment method for) the $50 technology fee. This process must be completed and any technology fines paid by August 9, or your child will become a day user only and will not be permitted to take their laptop home. If you need assistance or access to a computer to complete the online process, elementary parents may request assistance at their school's Open House, and TMS or THS parents may schedule an appointment with their school's Counseling Office: Tennessee Middle-call (423) 652-9449 or Tennessee High-call (423) 652-9494 and press "2" for the Counseling Office.

Elementary and middle school parents can also pay their school's activity fee online this year. You will be asked about doing so towards the end of the process. Although not required, these fees are necessary to enhance students' learning experiences.

You will use the PowerSchool Parent Portal to access the Returning Student Information Update form. YOU MUST USE YOUR PARENT ACCOUNT, NOT YOUR CHILD’S ACCOUNT TO PERFORM THIS TASK.

Please read the form carefully.

 Tennessee Online Public School: If enrolled or planning to enroll in TOPS, you do not need to complete the Returning Student Registration. You must apply to TOPS online. The deadline is August 2. For more information or to apply, visit https://tops.education/.


How do I get started?

The best way is to begin from the personalized email you received on July 16, 2024. However, if you do not have that as a starting point, visit https://powerschool.btcs.org and login. From the Parent Portal:

  1. Select the student you wish to register along the top left.
  2. Select the Returning Student Information Update link in the lower left corner.
  3. Enter your child's birthdate for confirmation.
  4. Begin completing the form.

I can’t remember my login for the PowerSchool Parent Portal.
If you have an existing parent account, it has not changed. If you are not able to retrieve your login credentials using the "Having trouble signing in?" link on the Sign-In page, please contact your school directly for assistance logging in to the Parent Portal.

Do I have to answer all the questions?
Questions marked with "required" note are required. 

What if I make a mistake?
If you would like to make a change prior to submitting the form, you can navigate back to the page using the menu on the left. If you have already submitted the form, you will need to contact your child's school so they can make the changes for you.

I’ve completed the form, now what?
Once you have finished entering your information, click “Submit.”  This will send all of the information you’ve entered to the school. If you cannot click on this button, you will need to make sure that you have answered all required questions.

What if I have more than one child in the district? Do I need to do this for each child?
Yes, you will need to provide information that is specific to each child. We recommend that you complete and submit one form and then start another. This will allow you to “snap” (or share) selected family information, which saves you time.
